EVER been stressed out by the thought of putting up bookshelves in your home? Well, that’s not the case for Dutch artist JanisIsDeMan, whose magical murals open up a whole new chapter in design.
These brilliant bookcase artworks have been created by the Utrecht street artist, who canvasses local residents to see what their favourite books are, and then incorporates them into his larger than life designs.

The project pictured above, titled simply Bookcase, can be found in Jan’s hometown Utrecht, while the picture at the head of this post was taken in the French city of Boulogne-sur-Mer, and aptly includes Les Miserables and Simone de Beauvoir on the shelves.

This one, meanwhile, was painted in the Russian settlement of Solnechnodolsk in the North Caucuses, and bears the title From Russia With Love. Spot the Russian doll on one of the shelves!

Hidden Knowledge is the name of this cutaway, which can be found at the Cours Liberation in the French city of Grenoble and, like the others, features books chosen by locals.

I particularly like this stack of books, one that will delight Bookstagrammers everywhere. It’s named Bookcase III and just part of a wider installation by Jan in the Dutch city of Harlingen. Wonder who chose George Orwell’s 1984?

But it’s not just books that are chosen by those living in the buildings the artist paints. This piece, titled Cabinet, in The Netherlands city of Nieuwegein, incorporates cherished curios chosen by residents. You have to love the teddy bear!

His work reaches out into other themes, too, as these pictures show, featuring everything from a giraffe to a sound system of which Motorhead would surely have been proud.
