NOW here’s a hot new attraction that’s an absolute blast – the chance to stand underneath a rocket launching from Kennedy Space Centre. Yes, you read that right. Underneath.
The Gantry at LC-39 is an interactive visitor experience that re-imagines the site’s historic Launch Complex 39 gantry, from which Apollo space race missions would lift off.
Highlight of the attraction, due to open this Spring, is a Test Fire Simulation, where guests can stand under a full-scale rocket engine as it simulates the power of an ignition.

Thunderous sounds, light and a “cooling mist” stand in for the engine’s exhaust while still delivering the “power and excitement of ignition,” according to project organisers.
It is, in fact, just one of many new features at The Gantry. Visitors can design and virtually launch their own rockets; there’s a theatre show, hyperwall gallery and interactive exhibits.
There’s a tower viewing platform offering 360-degree vistas, and an area from which to watch real rocket launches, complete with a big LED screen, where schedules permit.

A shaded courtyard with animal play sculptures and self-service al fresco dining add to the family-friendly appeal, and it’s included on the official tour bus itineraries.
“The Gantry at LC-39 is an exciting next step in our mission to inspire and educate the next generation of explorers,” says Therrin Protze, at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.
“This new attraction brings the stories around NASA’s research to monitor our planet and offer a deeper connection to the space program. This attraction will excite and educate all ages.”

The gantry – pictured above before the refurb – was known as the Launch Complex-39 Observation Gantry when it first opened in 1998, stands 60 feet tall and is located along the water’s edge.
Prior to being renovated, the tower suspended a space shuttle main engine, alongside exhibits and a film devoted to the winged spacecraft, how it was prepared for launch, and the science it carried into orbit.
