EVERYONE’S going to be talking about Blitz when the new wartime blockbuster goes global on Friday – and perhaps nowhere more so than in Hullywood. Yes, you read that right. It’s not a typo.
Acclaimed British director Steve McQueen’s new movie, which streams on Apple TV+ from November 22, may be set in 1940s London but many of the scenes were actually shot in Hull, on Yorkshire’s East Coast.
Hence its inclusion in ‘It Must Be Hullywood’, a movie and TV location trail of the set-jetting city, which has just been upgraded with a new Augmented Reality digital version, bringing it to life.
Filming of McQueen’s movie took place at locations including Hull Old Town, Hepworth Arcade and Walton Street fairground, using more than 750 extras. Red buses, vintage lamp-posts and shops were recreated too.

Blitz is just the latest role for Hull, which has hosted camera crews for a wide range of shoots, including The Crown, Enola Holmes 2, Victoria, Bodies and The Extraordinary Life of David Copperfield.
The trail gives visitors the chance to follow in the footsteps of global stars from Henry Cavill and Millie Bobby Brown to Peter Capaldi and Dev Patel, as well as Jenna Coleman and David Jason.

The AR Hullywood digital trail is available via the What Was Here app – and TransPennine Express has unveiled a mural by artist Andy Pea at Hull’s Paragon Interchange, in celebration.
Already out in UK cinemas, Blitz – starring Saoirse Ronan, Harris Dickinson and Stephen Graham – will stream globally on Apple TV+ from Friday. For more info on the AR trail check in here, and for general tourism advice head for Visit Hull.
