LOVING the new British Airways safety video that puts the Jane Eyre in air travel. Titled A British Original Period Drama, it’s Downton, Bridgerton and the Brontes all rolled in to one.
Inspired by some of our most famous literature, and the movies that have been made of them, the lavish video, filmed in gorgeous country houses across the nation, certainly haveth my attention.
So fasten your bodices, saddle up, and enjoy …
The five-minute film depicts ladies and lords of the manor, as well as housekeepers and butlers, going about their everyday lives before being abruptly interrupted by present-day BA staff.
They’re real staff, too. The film stars more than 40 of the airline’s current colleagues who work to ensure the comfort and safety of passengers here in the technological 21st century.

At one point, a 19th century socialite marvels at a moving picture, more commonly known as a laptop, before being reminded to store personal electronic devices before take-off.
At another point, a period costumed character asks in wonder: “Is it a winged creature of the air or, perchance, a celestial contrivance navigating the skies?”

Ellis Brett, an Apprentice in Aircraft Maintenance, responds: “No, ma’am. That’s a British Airways A350.”
When it came to location, the airline selected grand British country estates, including Hatfield House in Hertfordshire and Englefield House Estate in Berkshire to shoot the video.

Sharon Maguire, known for her work on Bridget Jones’s Diary and Bridget Jones’s Baby, directs, and costumes are by three-time Oscar-winning British costume designer Jenny Beavan.

“We know that these videos deliver vital safety information, and it is so important that we do everything we can to keep our customers engaged throughout,” says Calum Laming, British Airways’ Chief Customer Officer.
“When it came to selecting a genre, we wanted something that would enable us to do this, while resonating with global audiences, so a period drama with a little bit of humour seemed like the perfect fit.”

The BA video, which takes off on long-haul flights from August 1, continues the trend of inventive air safety videos offered by airlines worldwide.
My favourite remains the brilliant Lord of the Rings themed film made for Air New Zealand.
