IT IS the beacon of light that has saved countless lives, its light visible for 70 sea miles. Lismore Lighthouse stands on the small rock of Eilean Musdile, at the entrance to the Sound of Mull.
It was designed by Robert Stevenson and built by James Smith of Inverness. The Commissioners of the Northern Lighthouse Board had purchased the small island for £500 in 1830.
The 26-metre tower with its lantern on top, took about three years to build at a cost of £4,250, and remained one of the few manned lighthouses in the area until it was automated in 1965.
I’m just back from a Scottish sojourn and sorting through the many photos I took while exploring the spectacular scenery of Argyll & Bute – so thought I’d share a few with you this week.
Last one tomorrow. Can’t wait to go back.
