SECOND to the right and straight on ’til morning … The classic tale of Peter Pan has been snow-dusted with seasonal sparkle on a family Christmas lights trail in Worcestershire.
Neverland, produced by special arrangement with the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, follows the J M Barrie story with lights, music, special effects and a seasonal side of Santa.

Running in The Riverside Gardens – renamed The Enchanted Gardens for the occasion – at Webbs garden centre in Wychbold, it surprisingly serves up much more than you might expect.

The thousands of plants, bushes and trees in the gardens – home to a national collection of hellebores – are subtly illuminated to create a fairytale atmosphere, but that’s just for starters.

The lights trial meanders through the five-acre gardens, crossing the River Salwarpe, and cleverly twisting and turning to make the most of the space available, with something new to see around every corner.

The tale of the boy who never grew up is traced from the London bedroom of Wendy, John and Michael, taking in iconic locations such as Mermaid’s Lagoon, Pirate’s Creek and Tiger Lily’s camp.

There are snow flurries, whatever the weather; mist rises from the ground; there’s the sound of children’s laughter; birdsong echoes from the treetops; there’s a giant glitter ball worthy of TV’s Strictly. And added Elves. Plenty of Elves.

Music drifts through the chill air, from fantastical fairydust melodies to salty sea shanties – and then there’s the attention to detail in the many props which include a bedroom, vintage car, ship’s bridge and campsite.

Watch out for Tinkerbell’s tiny house in the base of a tree, kitted out with miniature furniture and tableware, and the woodland table in Wendy’s House where you can imagine dining on a forest feast.

(If you’re peckish for real, by the way, there’s a huge tipi serving food and drink at the entrance, and another, smaller, coffee shop halfway round the trail, just when you might want a winter warmer).

But the crowning glory is the big pirate ship where the battle with Captain Hook takes place. Created with a cleverly lit frame, its shipshape silhouette is reflected in the water below.

Finally (because this is Neverland where anything is possible) there’s the option to stop by Santa’s workshop to snap some selfies with Father Christmas. No gifts are given out but the meet-and-greet is included in the trail admission.

That’s a Christmas cracker when you consider that you usually pay through the nose for a visit to see the big fella. But then, the whole attraction represents good value for the admission charge.

There may be bigger Christmas light trails around but few, I suspect, will match this enchanting Neverland for a family fairytale attraction.
- I visited with my grown-up children and grandchildren as a party of six and we paid for our tickets and refreshments. I have no affiliation with Webbs.
