HE’S back, and the new trailer for David Tennant’s Doctor Who 60th anniversary reprise has set the Internet alight – but there’s a place in Wales where they’ll be watching with unusually avid interest.
The Time Lord’s home from home. The historic country house that he just can’t resist. He’s visited the stately home no fewer than 11 times in the last 18 years, and will be back for more.

In fact, Tredegar House, near Newport, South Wales, is such a firm favourite of the production team that the Beeb’s top-rated sci-fi show has filmed there on 13 occasions in all.
Each of the Doctors since David Tennant’s debut in the role in 2005 has filmed here, right up to highly-anticipated newcomer Ncuti Gatwa, a fascinating feature in the new National Trust magazine reveals.

“We’ve had a werewolf chasing Queen Victoria down the corridor and an Immortality Gate in the basement,” Tredegar’s House Manager Emily Price memorably tells the Autumn 2023 edition.
Ever since Prime Minister Harriet Jones addressed the nation from her office in the House in 2005, all manner of familiar faces have popped up at Tredegar in that time.

They’ve included King Charles II, Agatha Christie, Madame Pompadour and computer pioneer Charles Babbage alongside assorted aliens, werewolves, robots and TARDIS companions.
Bedrooms at the House were even used in 2007 for emotional scenes when the Doctor, transformed into human John Smith and married to nurse Joan Redfern, welcomed the birth of his son.

Most recently, Ncuti Gatwa, who makes his full debut as the Fifteenth Doctor this Christmas – after the Tennant specials – has been at the house filming splendid Regency scenes.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who, and the show’s ties with Tredegar and other NT properties, the National Trust has set up a special guide to its many filming locations here.

The Autumn 2023 edition of National Trust Magazine is available now, priced £4.95 or free to Trust members.
The 60th anniversary specials, starring David Tennant and Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, will be screened by BBC One in November, and mark the return of the evil Toymaker from way, way back in 1966. Watch the terrific new trailer below.
