New hotel offers world’s deepest sleep -1,375ft below ground

NOW that’s what I call dropping into a deep sleep – a new hotel in Wales is offering guests the chance to enjoy a good night’s nap 1,375 feet BELOW ground.

The Deep Sleep hotel, in Snowdonia, boasts a double bed grotto hewn out of solid rock and four two-bed cabins in what is touted as the world’s deepest subterranean slumber.

Only available for one-night stays, checking in on Saturday and leaving on Sunday, the Grotto room costs £550 for two, and the private cabins are each priced at £350.

Guests are met by operator Go Below at the Tanygrisiau Base near Blaenau Ffestiniog, where the experience begins with a 45-minute trek up into the mountains.

Eventually, you’ll reach a stop where you’ll get a helmet, light, harness and boots before venturing into the depths of the world’s largest and deepest abandoned slate mine.

It takes around 60 minutes to reach the bottom, where you arrive at a set of large steel doors bearing the message ‘Welcome to Deep Sleep!’ There’s a communal picnic table area where you can enjoy a complimentary meal before you head off to bed.

And no matter how deep your sleep, don’t expect a lengthy lie-in next morning. All guests must be awake at 8am for a hot drink and breakfast before starting the ascent back up to ground level.

Be warned that you’ll need to be relatively fit because the climbing will test your muscles, and bear in mind that the temperature down below is only around 10 degrees Celsius.
