THESE are the remarkable holiday homes from home that will be the driving force of TV funnyman Johnny Vegas’ Field of Dreams campsite when it pitches up permanently at a Midlands mansion this spring.
Previously a glamping attraction near Harrogate in Yorkshire, Vegas’ vision will become a full-time fixture at Lord and Lady Kerr’s Melbourne Hall in Derbyshire from April, and bookings are already being taken.
Bev and Johnny with Patricia
On offer for stays with a difference will be lovingly restored and converted vehicles including a German fire truck, a charabanc named Patricia, an American school bus and a classic Citroen Camper.
Inside Patricia
But that’s just for starters because even more surreal stays are being added, including a boat beside the lake and … a Puma helicopter.
The Puma chopper under renovation
The chopper served in Chile and Sierra Leone from 1970 until 2005 and is being readied for Spring. Once restoration is complete, it will be on offer for up to four people, with a fixed double bed and seating that converts to two singles.
The Puma has a roof deck, its own ground level decked area with table and seating, an outdoor fire pit for barbecues, and her own converted horse trailer bathroom.
Skoolie, the US school bus
The iconic vehicles will be situated across two sites, both within a short walk from the pool and the famous walled gardens which annually play host to the Live at Melbourne Hall summer series of events.
Smaller scale stay in Billy the Snail
It was after performing at the festival in May 2022 that Vegas approached owners Lord and Lady Kerr with the idea of bringing his Field of Dreams to the grounds of the South Derbyshire stately home.
The German firetruck
Channel 4 TV series Johnny Vegas: Carry On Glamping has been following Vegas and his long-suffering assistant Bev Dixon as they set up the site, and viewers will be able to see new episodes later this year.
The classic Citroen Camper
After the original Yorkshire glampsite opened in 2021, it became a cult camping attraction – but Vegas felt he needed to move on and find a larger home for the eclectic collection of repurposed vehicles.
Guests staying at the new site will also be able to combine their stay with the 2023 Live at Melbourne Hall calendar that is currently being planned, with top comedians, music, food and more.
In the past, the boutique festival has welcomed the likes of Julian Clary, Strictly Come Dancing legend Anton Du Beke, and celebrity chefs such as Gennaro Contaldo in the famed walled garden.
Melbourne Hall stands in an idyllic setting in Derbyshire, is home to one of the most treasured historical gardens in the country, and is the best surviving early 18th century English garden in the manner of le Notre.
Melbourne remains a lived-in family home for Lord and Lady Ralph Kerr – Lord Ralph is a direct descendant of Sir John Coke, who made the house his home in 1629 – and prides itself on a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
