TV weather wonder Carol Kirkwood sets sail in search of the Northern Lights

SHE has become a national treasure, her smile brightening up even the worst weather forecast. Now, TV presenter Carol Kirkwood is preparing for an enlightening experience – in the Arctic.

She will be special guest on a 15-day Northern Lights expedition cruise from Dover to the top of Norway next year, sailing on Hurtigruten’s MS Maud and calling in at coastal communities on the way.

The ship will spend five nights above the Arctic Circle, offering better odds of seeing one of nature’s most dazzling phenomena against the beautiful backdrop of Norway’s breathtaking scenery.

The cruise sails from Dover on February 18, 2023, and Carol will be onboard until the cruise reaches Tromsø on February 25, during which time she will give a lecture and take part in a Q&A session with passengers.

As one of TV’s most experienced and well-loved presenters, Carol is the BBC’s go-to for all things weather, and has won the Television & Radio Industry Club’s ‘best weather presenter’ award no fewer than nine times.

But that’s just part of the story.

She is no stranger to cruise voyages either, having sailed as a guest expert with several lines to various locations around the world – but the Northern Lights itinerary particularly plays to her meteorological expertise.

Between October and March is the best time to see the Northern Lights so the cruise will visit Alta, Tromsø, Narvik and Lofoten in the Arctic Circle, and also include the likes of Bergen, Nordfjord and Egersund.

Carol has also written two best-selling novels – there’s a third coming out in July 2023 – and has become something of a daredevil, tackling everything from flying with the Red Arrows to racing high-powered speedboats.

In 2015, she competed on BBC TV’s Strictly Come Dancing, where she was partnered with Pasha Kovalev, making it all the way through to week seven of the show.

She completed a charity tandem ride for Children in Need, learned to ice-skate live on TV, regularly lectures on life lessons, and even gave a personal talk to the late Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Prices start from £3,190 a head for the full 15 days. For a full itinerary and more details, set sail to the special web page on the Hurtigruten site here.
