Saturday Snapshot: Birmingham UK

LOVING the designs created to introduce each team of athletes during the Opening Ceremony of Birmingham’s Commonwealth Games on Thursday night.

In keeping with the city’s claim to have more canals than Venice, each nation’s name was designed primarily to resemble the traditional artwork seen on Brum’s many canalboats.

There are others which use fonts made famous by the Cadbury’s chocolate factory in Bournville and at city cultural landmarks such as Snobs nightspot and the city’s iconic Bullring.

The remarkable ceremony was designed as “a love letter to Brum” and the creative team certainly did the city proud. If you haven’t watched it yet, check it out on the BBC’s iPlayer.

Thanks to my good friend, photographer Jas Sansi for the image used in this post. Follow him on twitter.
